Central Jakarta to Raid Illegal Meat in Markets

The increasing needs for meat in the month of Ramadhan is usually used by unscrupulous rogue butchers to get multiplied profits by selling wild boar meat, gelonggongan beef (water-injected cattle before being slaughtered), and formalin chicken meat.

We’re going to raid traditional and modern markets to anticipate the circulation of wild boar meat, gelonggongan beef, and formalin meat during fasting month

To anticipate this circulation of illegal meat, Central Jakarta Animal Husbandry and Agriculture Sub-Department will hold raid in traditional as well as modern markets spread in eight sub-districts during the upcoming fasting month.

We’re going to raid traditional and modern markets to anticipate the circulation of wild boar meat, gelonggongan beef, and formalin meat during fasting month,” stated Head of Central Jakarta Animal Husbandry and Agriculture Sub-Department, Ishom Setyawan, Tuesday (6/10).

According to Setyawan, this meat raid is a routine activity held every year during Ramadhan. The activity usually begins after the dawn meal. The officers, who will be accompanied by personnel from Satpol PP and the City Police as well as Jakarta Laboratory of Animal Health and Veterinary Public Health in Ragunan, will take samples of the meat sold in the markets to know which one indicated formalin, wild boar, and gelonggongan.

“The lab car also joined in our inspection. Meat samples will be taken and checked in the lab car to know which meat containing formalin, wild boar, and so on,” he told.

In addition to the formalin meat, Central Jakarta Animal Husbandry and Agriculture Sub-Department also targets imported meat selling in the markets, because based on the rules, imported meat cannot be traded in the markets.

“Imported meat is only intended for hotels, restaurants, and caterings (Horeka),” he asserted.

Setyawan said that if the butchers were caught selling meat formalin, wild boar, gelonggongan, and imports, they will be given a warning. Afterwards, the dangerous meat will be confiscated to be then destroyed en mass.

“The meat will be seized and destroyed. We will call the butchers to be told that such meat should not be sold anymore. They should also make a dossier,” he uttered.

In the raid last year, Setyawan added, his department managed to collect over 400 kilograms of dangerous meat which finally destroyed in the Petukangan Slaughter House (RPH), South Jakarta.

“The destruction was merged with the confiscated meat from Animal Husbandry and Fishery Sub-Department collected from all areas in Jakarta,” he informed.
